Winter is Coming: The Birth and Death of Humanity and the Universe
We will explore the rise of universal histories and their crucial role in the 21st century. Examining the broad patterns of the deep past, from the Big Bang to the modern day, we shall discover the trends that unify all the natural and social sciences, and give humanity a common origin story. These broad patterns also illuminate humanity's place in the tale of 13.8 billion years, and forecast the many changes of the near and deep future. Even the deepest reaches of the future, when the Universe succumbs to Heat Death. For now, complexity rises, but one thing is certain. Winter is Coming.
David Baker is a lecturer in the interdisciplinary genre of Big History at Macquarie University. His research stretches across complexity thermodynamics, evolutionary biology, and human population ecology. Dr. Baker teaches courses that survey 13.8 billion years from the Big Bang to the modern day, and seminars that delve deeper into the remaining questions and debates about these trends. He has written two seasons of Big History for the Crash Course channel on Youtube, co-designed and manages several Big History MOOCs on Coursera, and is a contributor of content to the Big History history curriculum that is currently in two thousand schools worldwide.
Dr. Baker is a member of a research cadre at the Big History Institute at Macquarie. The Big History Institute is the home of Big History, the genre having been founded there in 1989. The Institute is now engaged in exploring interdisciplinary research projects that unite science with the humanities and questions that directly affect humanity's present and future. They are at the forefront of this kind of collaborative research and have partnerships with many other universities around the world. The Big History Institute also provides teaching services for university students, a graduate program, online education through Coursera, and innovative new high school curricula, customized to the needs of each country in the world, called Big History School, launching in 2018.
