Ein Dorf in Deutschland, Anfang der 30er Jahre: noch ist die Welt der demokratisch gesinnten Bewohner im Ort auf den ersten Blick weitgehend heil. Man geht ins Wirtshaus, trinkt sein Bier, spielt Karten, sinniert über eine bessere Welt - und freut sich auf die bevorstehende "italienische Nacht", den Höhepunkt des Sommers. Doch die örtliche faschistische Bewegung schickt sich nicht nur an, das republikanische Fest mit ihrem "deutschen Tag" zu sprengen, sondern den Demokraten im Dorf im Allgemeinen den Garaus zu machen. 

Das Deutsche Theater Brüssel freut sich, für seine Debütinszenierung Ödön von Horváths zeitloses Stück über die Zerbrechlichkeit der Demokratie in Zeiten gesellschaftlicher Zersplitterung und politischer Engstirnigkeit präsentieren zu können.

A village in Germany in the early 1930s: at first glance, the lives of the democratically minded locals still appear to be largely harmonious. They go to the pub, drink their beer, play cards, muse about a better world – and look forward to their upcoming "Italian Night," the highlight of the summer. However, the local fascist movement is not only preparing to disrupt the republican festival with its "German Day," but to overturn the world of the democrats as they know it.

The German Theatre Brussels is delighted to present Ödön von Horváth's timeless play about the fragility of democracy in times of social division and political parochialism as its debut production.
