Originaire de la Guadeloupe, Le Gwo Ka est un style musical principalement joué avec des tambours appelés "ka", les chants et la danse, font également partie intégrante de son identité.
Revisité dans les années 80 par le musicien Gérard Lockel, il prend la forme du Gwo Ka Modèn, et ajoute à sa composition des cuivres, de la guitare, mais également une gamme précise à respecter.
Ce concert sera l’occasion de présenter le “Karuka” inventé par Ruddy Boa, un instrument né dans le sillage du Gwadlouka, percussion métallique jouée avec des baguettes en bambou, inventée par Gérard Lockel pour faire entendre des sons contraires — ou plutôt, complémentaires — à ceux des peaux : le tambour Ka, la caisse claire de la batterie. À travers lui, l’improvisation retrouve sa place, comme un écho libre au tambour makè et à la batterie. C'est à cette histoire que rend hommage le projet "Lockel & Gwo-Ka Modèn Explorations", une musique-symbole nationale, outil de décolonisation de la pensée musicale à travers une musique tonale et atonale basée sur la science, le swing et le sentiment musical du gwo-ka traditionnel.

Originating in Guadeloupe, Gwo Ka is a musical style played mainly on drums called “ka”, with song and dance also forming an integral part of its identity.
Revisited in the 80s by musician Gérard Lockel, it takes the form of Gwo Ka Modèn, and adds brass instruments and guitar to its composition, as well as a precise scale to be respected.
This concert will be an opportunity to present the “Karuka” invented by Ruddy Boa, an instrument born in the wake of the Gwadlouka, a metallic percussion played with bamboo sticks, invented by Gérard Lockel to make sounds opposite - or rather, complementary - to those of the skins: the Ka drum, the snare drum of the drums. Through it, improvisation finds its place, as a free echo to the makè drum and the drums. It's to this history that the “Lockel & Gwo-Ka Modèn Explorations” project pays tribute, a national music-symbol, a tool for decolonizing musical thought through tonal and atonal music based on the science, swing and musical feeling of traditional gwo-ka.
