Puisant ses sources dans les musiques créoles de La Nouvelle-Orléans et les diverses musiques cubaines, le latin jazz revêt une grande variété de formes musicales, souvent dansantes. Dans le sud des États-Unis comme aux Antilles, les échanges musicaux sont facilités par le brassage des populations. Le « son » cubain, mais aussi les danses, habanera et danzón, apparus au début du xixe siècle, contaminent le style New Orleans. Les années 1960 et 1970 ouvrent de nouveaux horizons musicaux en incorporant la musique brésilienne. Du côté du rock, Carlos Santana reprend Evil Ways de Willie Bobo et Oyé Como Va de Tito Puente, alors que le jazz rock intègre des couleurs latines, avec par exemple le pianiste Chick Corea ou le groupe Weather Report de Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter et Jaco Pastorius.



Drawing its sources from the Creole music of New Orleans and various Cuban music, Latin jazz takes on a wide variety of musical forms, often danceable. In the south of the United States as in the West Indies, musical exchanges are facilitated by the mixing of populations. The Cuban “sound”, but also the dances, habanera and danzón, which appeared at the beginning of the 19th century, contaminate the New Orleans style. The 1960s and 1970s opened new musical horizons by incorporating Brazilian music.
