An evening dedicated to Míkis Theodorákis, commemorating the centenary of his birth.
At the heart of the concert is the ‘Canto General’: a choral fresco where Pablo Neruda's poems meet the bright, popular music of Míkis Theodorákis.
A succession of powerful scenes (landscapes, peoples, oppression, liberation) in which Neruda's words become a collective song – a ‘cry of humanity’ carried by the choir, soloists, actor and instrumental ensemble.
From the genesis of the continent to the struggles for freedom, this work echoes the memory of the peoples of Latin America.
As a prelude, four songs from other vocal compositions by Míkis Theodorákis:
- Ásma Asmáton — excerpt from the Mauthausen Cantata (texts by Greek poet Iákovos Kambanellis)
- Omorfi póli — excerpt from the Lipotaktes cycle (The Deserter) (poems by Yannis Theodorákis)
- Dakrisména mátia — excerpt from the Lipotaktes cycle (The Deserter) (poems by Yannis Theodorákis)
- Ena to helidoni — excerpt from the oratorio Axion Esti (texts by Greek poet Odysseus Elytis)
