In this 2-day workshop, Naoko, the third deshi of Naka Akira, will share her interpretation and personal approach to semenawa in Naka Style.
“縄は自由だ Rope is free” - as what Naka-sensei and Naoko believe. As opposed to learning this style in a shape-driven way and trying to reach a pre-determined end goal, we will explore and focus on the meaning and details of every single rope and every moment, which will allow us to tie with deeper connection and empathy within semenawa.
We will build an in-depth understanding on three important aspects of tying in the style, balancing both the “how” and the “why”:
- Techniques
- Progression in feelings and connection
- Traditional aesthetics
We will learn together through discussion, observations of demonstrations by Naoko, and exercises on both hard and soft techniques. Naoko will adapt her teaching to the students; exercises may be floor ties or suspensions depending on the level, progression and interest of the students.
Please note that this workshop will cover the Naka-style of gote in extensive detail, and it will be the main upper-body harness we will use throughout the weekend. Please also note that Naoko’s way of tying the gote differs from the European interpretation.
Participants should note that Naoko’s education is largely from private lessons with Naka-sensei in Tokyo. This means her teaching style, techniques and philosophy are heavily influenced by her experience in Tokyo and Hong Kong.
