Avec Gospel of the Ancestors, Joanne Dolly poursuit une recherche musicale profondément personnelle, à la croisée du jazz, du gospel et des héritages afro-caribéens. Martiniquaise, chanteuse, contrebassiste et compositrice, elle fait de sa voix et de sa contrebasse deux instruments intimement liés, porteurs à la fois de groove, de mélodie et d’émotion. Entourée au piano par Carl-Henri Morisset, Joanne imagine un espace où l’improvisation rencontre le chant, où les traditions se réinventent dans une écriture contemporaine. Pour cette nouvelle étape, elle invite Lea Manegli, Jeremy Lufuankenda, Ciella Ndayishimiye et Marvin Sita aux chœurs, qui donnent au projet une dimension collective et polyphonique.
Les voix se répondent, se superposent et deviennent matière, souffle et mémoire.
Entre ferveur du gospel, liberté du jazz et pulsations afro-caribéennes, la musique de Joanne Dolly cherche moins à reproduire un héritage qu’à le faire vivre aujourd’hui.
Gospel of the Ancestors évoque ainsi la transmission, la mémoire et ce qui relie les générations par le chant. Un concert pensé comme un moment de partage, de célébration et d’improvisation, où chaque voix trouve sa place dans un même mouvement. Une invitation à entrer dans l’univers de Joanne Dolly et à découvrir une musique vivante, généreuse et profondément incarnée.

With Gospel of the Ancestors, Joanne Dolly pursues a deeply personal musical journey, at the crossroads of jazz, gospel and Afro-Caribbean traditions. A native of Martinique, singer, double bassist and composer, she treats her voice and her double bass as two intimately linked instruments, conveying groove, melody and emotion in equal measure. Accompanied on piano by Carl-Henri Morisset, Joanne creates a space where improvisation meets song, where traditions are reinvented through contemporary composition. For this new phase, she has invited Lea Manegli, Jeremy Lufuankenda, Ciella Ndayishimiye and Marvin Sita to provide backing vocals, lending the project a collective and polyphonic dimension.
The voices echo one another, layer upon one another and become substance, breath and memory.
Blending the fervour of gospel, the freedom of jazz and Afro-Caribbean rhythms, Joanne Dolly’s music seeks not so much to reproduce a heritage as to bring it to life today.
