The hilltop neighbourhood of Montmartre, Paris, is one of the city’s most popular tourist spots. Until 1860 it was just outside Paris’ city but under the act of extension of the city, it became the 18th arrondissement of Paris. During the Belle Époque, many artists lived in, had studios or worked in Montmartre, including Modigliani, Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
