From Plant Fibres to Textiles: Measuring Variability Across Scales

15 September 2026

How do we reliably characterise plant-based fibres when their properties vary so widely, from one fibre to another, from cell wall to yarn, and ultimately to textile performance?

On 15 September 2026, the UPWEARS project will host its Workshop #3 in Lorient (UBS) to explore a key challenge for bio-based textiles: mechanical characterisation and data interpretation across scales.

This event will bring together researchers, technical experts and stakeholders to share best practices, discuss methodologies and connect measurement approaches from fundamental material science to textile engineering.

Morning session | Scientific talks

The morning will feature a sequence of expert talks designed to cover the full chain of characterisation, from elementary fibres to yarns and textiles, with dedicated time for Q&A and discussion.

Topics:

  • Christophe Baley, UBS – Tensile testing on elementary fibres & measurement variability
  • Olivier Arnould, Univ Montpellier – Mechanical characterisation of plant cell walls
  • Thomas Jeannin, UMLP – Data processing for tensile test results
  • François Boussu, ENSAIT – Mechanical characterisation of yarns and textiles

Afternoon session | Demonstrations & hands-on visits (limited capacity)

In the afternoon, participants will be invited to discover experimental approaches through small-group rotations in laboratory settings. Demonstrations may include key characterisation equipment and methods (e.g., AFM, SEM, sample preparation, mechanical testing), directly connected to the concepts addressed during the morning talks.

A local textile “bonus” | Breton lace workshop (tbc)

To highlight regional textile heritage, we are also exploring an optional interactive session dedicated to traditional Breton lace-making, in collaboration with a local lace association. This hands-on moment would offer a cultural and creative perspective alongside the scientific programme.

Registration & updates

Registration is now open via the following link: UPWEARS Workshop #3 – Registration Form – Remplir le formulaire

Participants are kindly invited to register as soon as possible to secure their spot, especially for the afternoon demonstrations where capacity may be limited.
