Spit and Image - screening and conversation between artists Dorota Gawęda and Eglė Kulbokaitė, curator and writer Anya Harrison, and film producer Maya Vidgrain (artcore).

Taking the form of a visual essay, Spit and Image will focus on recent video works by Dorota Gawęda and Eglė Kulbokaitė and will open up questions about technology and fear, horror and monstrosity, which will be discussed with Spit and Image producer Maya Vidgrain, and writer and curator Anya Harrison.

Spit and Image 2 by Dorota Gawęda and Eglė Kulbokaitė will be screened during this event. Exploring doubling and estrangement, the video work moves from the intimate mirrored table setting of Spit and Image 1 into an exterior of vast disconnection: a fog-laden city where the figure wanders, unable to meet her own gaze.  First presented as part of the artists’ solo exhibition at MACA in Beijing earlier this year, the video series investigates the fractured self through the lenses of historical portraiture, spiritualist photography and contemporary algorithmic vision. Between a mirrored séance table to a fog-shrouded cityscape, the works trace a continuum from early photographic trickery to AI-driven image production, linking bodily and environmental estrangement to the spectral doubling that haunts both past and present.

Spit and Image - projection et conversation entre les artistes Dorota Gawęda et Eglė Kulbokaitė, la curatrice et écrivaine Anya Harrison et la productrice de film Maya Vidgrain (artcore).

 

Sous forme d’un essai visuel, la rencontre se concentrera sur les récentes œuvres vidéo de Dorota Gawęda et Eglė Kulbokaitė et s’ouvrira sur une discussion abordant la technologie, la peur, l’horreur et la monstruosité, en présence de la productrice Maya Vidgrain et de l’écrivaine et curatrice Anya Harrison.

 

Le film Spit and Image 2 réalisé par Dorota Gawęda et Eglė Kulbokaitė sera projeté lors de cet événement. Explorant le thème du double et de l’étrangeté, l’œuvre vidéo transcende le cadre domestique de Spit and Image 1 pour s’ouvrir sur un extérieur marqué par une vaste déconnexion : une ville enveloppée de brouillard où une entité déambule, incapable de croiser son propre regard.

Présentée pour la première fois dans le cadre de l’exposition personnelle des artistes au MACA à Pékin plus tôt cette année, la série vidéo interroge le moi fracturé à travers l’histoire du portrait, la photographie spirite et la vision algorithmique contemporaine. Passant d’une table de séance miroir à un paysage urbain où les infrastructures reflètent l'individu et sa réalité, les œuvres tracent un continuum allant des anciens trucages photographiques à la production d’images assistée par IA, reliant l’étrangeté corporelle et environnementale au double spectral qui hante le passé comme le présent.
